Harry had been expected to deploy to southern Iraq in the next few weeks but Army Chief of Staff Gen. Sir Richard Dannatt, who recently traveled to Iraq, said the situation there had become too dangerous and media scrutiny of the plans had exacerbated the situation.

The 22-year-old prince, who had long dreamed of leading his tank unit in Iraq, said he is disappointed but respected the decision.

Commanders reportedly had reconsidered their decision to allow the prince to fight in Iraq for fear he would become a target of insurgents and his presence could endanger other soldiers. Harry’s regiment, the Blues and Royals, is due to begin a six-month tour of duty in Iraq within weeks.

Over the past two weeks, newspapers have reported threats by Iraqi insurgents to kill or kidnap the prince, including claims his photograph had been widely circulated among militants. Military chiefs acknowledge that Harry would be an attractive target and that his presence could lead to a surge in attacks on British forces.

The Defense Ministry would not confirm the report in The Sun newspaper, saying only that “all operational deployments are under constant review” and that the army wanted to treat the third in line for the throne as an ordinary soldier.

However, Britain’s Press Association and Sky News cited unidentified sources as saying Harry would quit the army if he wasn’t allowed to go to Iraq.

Prince Charles is understood to have been concerned that it was unfair on Miss Middleton – who has been constantly bounded by the paparazzi at her central London home – for his elder son to prolong the relationship indefinitely without marrying her. Unlike Prince William, she does not live in heavily guarded private palaces or have a personal bodyguard.

“William was recently advised by his father to think about making up his mind one way or the other,” said one source.

The Sun newspaper reported Saturday that the couple had reached an “amicable agreement” to separate. Sources confirmed the split to the Press Association news agency.

William’s Clarence House office refused to comment, saying it did not discuss the prince’s private life, but royal sources did not deny the report, tacitly acknowledging it was true.

The newspaper said the split was caused by the huge pressures on the young couple and by William’s career in the army. The second in line to the throne graduated from Sandhurst military academy in December and is undergoing further training at an army base in rural England.
